Mel A. Monk, P.E, Executive Director

Mel graduated Summa Cum Laude from Auburn University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree. He attended George W. Long High School in Skipperville, Alabama, and was Valedictorian of his class. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Alabama.

Prior to coming to the Association, Mel was with The Alabama Department of Transportation in Mobile from 1992-2002.  During that time, Mel was in charge of all aspects of construction including asphalt plants, concrete plants, and pavement design. He also served as Division Hazardous Materials Coordinator.

Mel is presently a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a Board Member of the National Center for Asphalt Technology along with service on various industry committees.

Sherry L. Monk, Executive Assistant

Sherry has been the Administration Assistant of AAPA since May 1997.  She is responsible for daily management of the office administration, website maintenance, and organization of the Association’s activities.

Prior to working with the Association, she worked in the Construction Industry for three years and with the Alabama Propane Gas Association for six years as the Executive Assistant.

Sherry is a native of Alabama born in Montgomery and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and attended Troy State University in Montgomery.

Sherry is a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).

Jack R. Mathews, Retired Executive Director

A graduate of the University of Iowa, Jack has been involved in the asphalt industry for over 40 years.  He has been employed with the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa, the Asphalt Institute, and the Wisconsin Asphalt Pavement Association prior to becoming the Executive Director of the Alabama Asphalt Pavement Association in 1982.

Under Jack’s leadership, the Alabama asphalt industry has accomplished many significant milestones, most notably the implementation of a statewide quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) program and the development of a hot mix asphalt pavement design guide.

Jack retired on June 30, 2001, after 19 years of dedicated service.
